Software Engineer Resume Example: Show What You Built, Shipped, and Kept Running

A complete software engineer resume example with summary options, a sample resume, the skills worth listing, achievement bullets, and the ATS keywords engineering postings use, for backend, frontend, and full-stack roles.

What a Strong Software Engineer Resume Should Show

An engineering manager skimming your resume is trying to answer a few practical questions quickly. What languages and frameworks have you written production code in, and how recently? What kind of systems have you worked on: customer-facing web apps, internal tools, data pipelines, mobile clients, or distributed backend services? How large were they, measured in users, requests, data volume, or team size? And which parts did you personally own, rather than touch in passing? A strong resume answers all of that in the first half page. It names the stack precisely (Go and PostgreSQL on AWS reads very differently from Java and Oracle on premises), it attaches a measurable result to the most important pieces of work, such as lower latency, fewer incidents, faster builds, or a feature that moved a product metric, and it shows how you work: code review, testing, CI/CD, on-call, and design documents. Seniority shows in scope. Junior engineers describe features they delivered; senior engineers describe systems they designed, trade-offs they made, and engineers they helped grow.

Software Engineer Resume Summary Examples

Keep the summary to two or three sentences. Lead with your focus area and main stack, then point to the kind of problem you are best at solving:

  • Experienced backend engineer: Software engineer with seven years building backend services in Go and Python on AWS, most recently owning the payments API for a subscription platform. Designs for reliability first, with strong habits around observability, load testing, and incident follow-up, and regularly mentors newer engineers through code review.
  • New graduate or bootcamp graduate: Software engineer with a BS in Computer Science (or a full-stack bootcamp certificate) and a summer internship on a React and Node.js team. Shipped two production features behind feature flags, wrote the unit and integration tests for both, and maintains a public GitHub portfolio with a deployed full-stack project.
  • Career changer: Former mechanical engineer moving into software after two years writing Python automation for test-lab data, now building web applications with TypeScript, React, and PostgreSQL. Brings a disciplined approach to requirements, testing, and documentation, plus experience explaining technical results to non-technical managers.

Sample Software Engineer Resume

This sample shows a mid-level full-stack engineer applying for a senior role at a product company. Employers are described rather than named, and every number is illustrative: it shows the kind of figure worth including, not a target to copy. Swap in your own stack, scale, and results.

Software Engineer Skills to Include

A long list of every technology you have ever seen hurts more than it helps. Group your skills, keep them to what you can discuss in an interview, and make sure the important ones show up again inside a bullet:

Skill areaWhat to listHow to prove it in a bullet
LanguagesPython, Java, Go, TypeScript, JavaScript, C#, C++, Rust, Kotlin, SQLTie each main language to a service or feature you built with it
Frameworks and librariesReact, Next.js, Angular, Vue, Node.js, Spring Boot, Django, FastAPI, .NETName the framework next to the product surface it powered
Data storesPostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, KafkaDescribe a schema, query, or caching change and its effect on speed or cost
Cloud and infrastructureAWS, Google Cloud, Azure, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, serverlessSay what you deployed or migrated and at what scale
CI/CD and toolingGit, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, feature flags, code reviewShow a build, release, or developer-experience improvement with a before-and-after
Testing and qualityUnit, integration, and end-to-end testing; Jest, pytest, JUnit, Playwright, CypressReport coverage gains, fewer escaped defects, or safer releases
Reliability and observabilityMonitoring, logging, tracing, on-call, incident response, SLOs, Datadog, Prometheus, GrafanaPoint to an outage reduced, an alert tuned, or a latency target met

Software Engineer Achievement Bullets

Good engineering bullets follow a simple pattern: the action you took, the technology involved, and the result it produced. Adapt these models with your own details:

  • Rewrote a nightly reconciliation job from a single-threaded Python script into a batched, parallel worker, shortening runtime from five hours to forty minutes.
  • Built a reusable React component library with Storybook documentation, used by three product teams to ship consistent forms and tables.
  • Replaced polling with event-driven updates over Kafka, reducing database load on the orders service by roughly a third.
  • Added structured logging and distributed tracing with OpenTelemetry, which shortened the time to locate the root cause during incidents.
  • Shipped a self-serve data export feature end to end, from API design and background jobs to the UI, that removed a recurring support request.
  • Onboarded and mentored three junior engineers, pairing on their first production changes and reviewing their design documents.

ATS Keywords for Software Engineer Resumes

Applicant tracking systems and recruiters both search for the exact names of languages, frameworks, and platforms, so spell them the way the posting does (JavaScript, not Javascript; PostgreSQL, not Postgres, if that is what the ad says). Common keywords include software engineering, software development, full-stack, backend, frontend, object-oriented programming, data structures and algorithms, system design, distributed systems, microservices, REST APIs, GraphQL, cloud computing, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, Git, automated testing, test-driven development, Agile, Scrum, code review, performance optimization, scalability, observability, and on-call. Include only the ones that describe work you have actually done, and make sure the posting’s top three or four technologies appear in your experience section, not just in your skills list. Keep the layout simple as well: a single column, standard section headings such as Experience, Skills, and Education, and plain text rather than skill bars or logos, so the parser reads every technology you name in the order you wrote it.

Common Software Engineer Resume Mistakes

These are the habits that most often make a capable engineer’s resume read as average:

  • Describing responsibilities (“worked on the backend”) instead of outcomes, with no sign of what changed because of your work.
  • Burying the stack: if a reviewer has to guess which language a bullet was written in, it will not count toward the posting’s requirements.
  • Padding the skills section with tools used once in a tutorial, which invites interview questions you cannot answer well.
  • Leaving out scale entirely, so a hobby project and a system handling millions of requests look the same on paper.
  • Linking to a GitHub profile with empty or abandoned repositories; link to one or two maintained projects instead, or leave the link off.

Software Engineer Resume FAQs

Questions engineers often ask while putting together a resume:

Should a software engineer resume be one page?
For new graduates and engineers with up to roughly five to seven years of experience, one page is usually enough and forces you to keep only your strongest work. Senior and staff engineers with several relevant roles can use two pages, as long as the first page carries the most recent and most relevant experience.
Do I need a projects section?
It matters most early in your career or when changing fields, because it shows working code when your job history cannot. Pick one to three projects, name the stack, describe what the project does, and link to the repository or a live demo. Experienced engineers can usually drop it unless a project is directly relevant to the role.
How do I show impact if I do not have exact numbers?
Use honest approximations (“roughly halved build time”), relative change, or concrete scope such as number of services, users, or teams affected. You can also describe a qualitative result that matters to the business, such as removing a manual step or unblocking a product launch. Never invent precise figures you could not explain in an interview.
Should I list LeetCode rankings or competitive programming?
Only if the result is notable or the role values it, such as a strong placement in a recognized contest. Most hiring teams care far more about shipped work, so give that space to production experience or substantial projects.
How should I tailor my resume for backend versus frontend roles?
Reorder your skills and bullets so the posting’s focus comes first. For backend roles, lead with APIs, data stores, scaling, and reliability work. For frontend roles, lead with frameworks, performance, accessibility, and design-system work. Full-stack postings usually want evidence of both, so keep one strong bullet from each side near the top.

Olyres Optimization Tip

Engineering postings for the same title can ask for completely different stacks. Run your resume against the specific job description in Olyres to see which languages, frameworks, and practices it names that your experience section does not yet show, then add them to bullets where they genuinely belong rather than stretching your skills list. When you apply to several teams, save a version per posting so the backend, frontend, or platform emphasis of each one stays intact.
