What the free check looks at

Can software read your file?

Scanned or image-only PDFs, tables, embedded images, two-column layouts, design-tool exports and page count.

Are the basics where an ATS looks?

Email, phone, LinkedIn and location, standard section headings, dated roles, length and bullet structure.

Does it match the job?

Paste a job description to see which listed skills your résumé states, which it only hints at, and which it never mentions.

How to act on your results

The report lists every finding at once. Working through it in this order saves the most time:

  1. Fix anything that stops software reading the file first: a scanned page, text inside images, or a layout the check flags. Until that is clean, every other finding may be incomplete.
  2. Add what is missing from the basics, such as a phone number, a dated role or a standard heading like “Experience” in place of a creative one.
  3. Go through the job description’s skills. Where the report says your résumé never mentions a skill you genuinely have, add it inside a bullet that shows where you used it, not only in a skills list.
  4. Leave a skill out if you do not have it. A gap you explain in a cover letter is better than a claim an interviewer can test.
  5. Run the check again after editing. The free check has no monthly limit, so compare versions until the findings you can act on are gone.

Résumé or CV, the check is the same

Employers in the US and Canada ask for a résumé; in the UK, Ireland, the UAE, India and much of Europe the same document is usually called a CV. Applicant tracking software reads both the same way, so the check does too. Two pages is within the length it expects. If your CV carries a photo, as is common in some regions, the file check is likely to flag an embedded image: that is a reminder that text inside an image cannot be read, so keep every word of your CV as real text.

Before you upload

  • Use a PDF or Word (.docx) file up to 4 MB, or paste the text instead.
  • Export a text-based PDF from your editor. A photographed or scanned page has no text for any parser to read.
  • Paste the whole job description, including the requirements and responsibilities, not only the job title.
  • Check the version you upload is the one you will send. A résumé saved under “final-2” is easy to mix up.

Rule-based checks and AI analysis are different

The free check runs fixed rules: it reads your file the way parsing software does and compares the words in your résumé with the skills named in a job description. It never sends your résumé to an AI model, and nothing is stored on our servers.

With a free account you can also run the AI analysis, which reads requirements in any profession, weighs how your experience is described rather than only which words appear, and suggests wording improvements that never invent experience. It counts toward the Free plan's monthly allowance and only runs when you start it. No checker, rule-based or AI, can guarantee how a particular employer's system will rank you.
